Cardio: Afraid Muscle Mass Will Make You “Bulky?” Fear No More!

build muscle to lose fat

There’s been a rumor going around for a few years that women love to buy into. Cardio is what makes you sexy, and weightlifting makes you bulky.

Cardio is fantastic for keeping you healthy, but lifting weights increases your sexiness exponentially. Not only will you not look “bulky,” you’ll actually lose unwanted (fat) weight.

According to Gino Caccavale, Founder of Muscle in Motion:

“While cardio burns more calories than resistance training during your workout, lifting weights torches more fat overall. In a study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, women who completed an hour-long strength-training workout burned an average of 100 more calories in the 24 hours afterward than those who skipped the weights. The more muscle owned, the more fat burned.”

Let’s take a look at that last statement for a moment…

“The more muscle owned, the more fat burned.” SO true!

Doctors Agree: Muscles Are Awesome!

According to Dr. Michael Roizen, MD:

“Adding muscle to your body burns fat because, well, the muscle needs the energy to survive. A pound of muscle uses between 75 and 150 calories a day (remember, it’s working and using energy), while a pound of fat only needs 3 calories a day (fat does nothing to help your body, the ingrate, so it doesn’t need the energy to maintain itself). Maintaining that friendly, fat-burning muscle mass only takes a few minutes — 10 minutes, three times a week, to be exact.”

And Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD chimed in, saying:

“While muscles give us the metabolic ability to burn calories every time we move—during exercise, during gardening, during sex—their true advantage is that they constantly feed on calories, even when you’re moving about as fast as a skateboard with a busted wheel. See, every pound of muscle burns between 50 and 150 calories a day just to sustain itself, while every pound of fat only feeds on 1 to 3 calories. Day after day, that’s a huge difference in your metabolic rate and your daily calorie burn. When you add a water bottle full of muscle to your body, you’re able to burn a refrigerator full of fat.”

Not to mention the National Academy of Sports Medicine had this to say:

“When you build lean muscle mass, the additional muscle requires additional energy. In turn, this raises your resting metabolic rate, or the number of calories your body burns while at rest. This increased bodily demand for calories can aid in keeping you slim when combined with sound eating habits.”

To put it simply: Muscle EATS fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat you’ll lose – just by having the muscles there, to begin with!

So, Ladies, put your fears to rest. Not only is weightlifting a fun hobby – you’ll look sexier each time you do it!

Get out there and GET FIT! 🙂
